Eigengrau’s Generator: A Non-Gamer’s Primer

Eigengrau’s Generator: A Non-Gamer’s Primer

If you’re not from a D&D audience, you might need a primer.

Eigengrau’s Generator is a webapp that creates a whole fantasy town, complete with sociopolitics, buildings, and inhabitants. Think of it like a cross between Wikipedia and a fantasy travel brochure, detailing everything that goes on in the town.

Who uses it?

It’s used as a tool in Dungeons and Dragons games, where players will travel to towns to rest and recuperate in between adventures. These towns are often not important, though, and a busy Dungeon Master might not have time nor the inclination to write up the local tavern’s menu, or decide exactly what the blacksmith has in stock.

Why?

When Eigengrau’s Generator was first developed, there were limited options for Dungeon Masters who wanted a full town generated, ready to read out to players. To date, it is the only town generator (to our knowledge) that takes a holistic, all-encompassing method of generation, where the sociopolitics and racial demographics of the town impact the NPCs that appear.
